One of the great joys of PhotoManipulation is the act of using photographic images and hand-painted elements to fabricate realities. What makes this new art-form so potent is the fact that you can create a sense of realism that in my opinion cant really be matched by other mediums. To attain the level where you can articulate your ideas into photorealistic realities takes a fair amount of practice, but fortunately there are many resources that can assist you get there much much faster than trial and error alone.
When I really started to focus on lighting in my work, the quality of my pieces made a monumental jump. As authors and consumers of Photo Manipulated works, we spend a long time viewing thousands of images within the PM gallery, and at times there is a noticeable boom in popularity for particular styles or themes. This phenomena is not exclusive within our chosen medium, but something that is apparent in anything that engages human interest.
An understanding of visual trends, their propogation and the cycle of influence is an area well worth examining, particularly those involved in industry. More often than not, a broad knowledge of aesthetic styles gives the artist a creative edge; allowing them to gauge the contextual relevance and quality of their work.
